The “Act on Registration and Evaluation of Chemical Substances”, also known as K-REACH, came into force on January 1, 2015. K-REACH makes it mandatory for manufacturers and importers of chemical substances to submit information for hazard screening and risk assessment of chemical substances distributed in Korea. Substances subject to registration, notification or exemption are classified according to whether a chemical substance is a new chemical substance or an existing chemical substance, and the amount of manufacturing imports.
According to K-REACH, all new chemical substances manufactured or imported (substances not listed on the Korean Existing Chemicals List) and existing chemical substances of 1 ton or more per year must be registered, notified, or exempted. In the case of existing chemical substances of 1 ton or more, (late) pre-registration is required to receive the grace period.
